OptumG2 Background

Optum G2 is a comprehensive finite element program for geotechnical stability and deformation analysis. Its modern graphical user interface ensures an intuitive and efficient workflow. The computational core builds on state-of-the-art numerical algorithms that lead to an unprecedented efficiency and robustness – independent of the complexity of the model.

GENERAL FEATURES

Limit Analysis
Limit analysis provides an efficient means of assessing the bearing capacity of geostructures directly without the need for exhaustive load-displacement analysis.

Mesh Adaptivity
All analyses come with the option of using automatic adaptive mesh refinement. This allows for a high degree of accuracy at a moderate computational effort.

Strength Reduction
Strength reduction analysis involves a reduction of the material parameters until failure occurs. The resulting reduction factor may be interpreted as the factor of safety.

Integrated analysis types
Most geotechnical analyses require several independent analyses before the main analysis can proceed. In OptumG2 preliminary analyses are carried out automatically as part of the main analysis. This includes seepage analysis based on general variably saturated flow theory and a unique procedure for calculating the initial stresses on the basis of a specified earth pressure coefficient.

Modern graphical user interface
The graphical user interface of OptumG2 has been designed to ensure maximum efficiency in defining problems and interpreting results. Coupled with a computational core that poses very few limitations, the result is a program that is easy and intuitive to use – both for simple problems as well as for problems involving numerous construction stages, materials, and analysis types.

Stochastic analysis
To account for the inherent uncertainty and variability of the material parameters describing the strength and deformation properties of geomaterials, OptumG2 comes with the possibility to conduct stochastic analysis on the basis of the random fields concept. Random distributions of a specified parameter are generated and the analysis is carried out in a Monte Carlo fashion. Rather than a single value of settlement, bearing capacity or similar, the end result is probability distributions of these quantities.

Initial Stress Analysis
Geostatic stresses are determined in an efficient and rigorous manner using this analysis which is unique to OptumG2.

Staged Construction
Staged construction comes with a high degree of flexibility and any changes to material, geometry, etc, between stages are specified in an ad hoc manner.

Elastoplastic Analysis
Elastoplastic analysis can be carried out in an efficient and robust manner using the dedicated algorithms implemented in OptumG2.

Design Approaches
OptumG2 includes user-friendly functionality for automatic application of partial factors according to the various Design Approaches of Eurocode 7.

Accurate Soil and Rock Models
OptumG2 comes with both simple and advanced constitutive models for soil and rock including Mohr-Coulomb, Hoek-Brown, Modified Cam Clay, and EMC.
